Huntsmen & Huntresses
The First Line of Defense
Huntsmen and Huntresses are combat professionals that serve as the primary force for defending humanity from Grimm, but their duties go far beyond just that. With each individual Hunter being somewhere between a brutally efficient specialist and a worldly jack-of-all-trades, Huntsmen can and will find themselves also assisting local law enforcement with particularly dangerous or crafty criminals, helping recover survivors and rebuild in the aftermath of Grimm attacks, aiding and protecting researchers and caravans out beyond the walls, and educating unlicensed Hunters-in-training.
Operation
The identities, residences, and combat capabilities of Hunters is carefully recorded and stored by an organization called The Hunters Lodge, which handles licensing and large-scale mission assignment for the world's Hunters. This information is stored as a check against the power of Hunters, allowing them to easily identify and track down any that might find themselves on the other side of the law. Off-duty, Hunters must abide by the same laws and restrictions that any civilian would follow, the only exceptions being when criminal or Grimm activity is suspected nearby. Still, even when this is the case, they operate under the code set by The Hunters Lodge, as agreed upon by all of the kingdoms.Licensing
In order to become an officially recognized Hunter, one must apply to take the test at the office of their kingdom's branch of The Hunters Lodge. In order to qualify, you must submit an extensive form detailing your complete capabilities, a complete record of all missions you have undertaken (regardless of success or failure), and two letters of recommendation from licensed Hunters. If your application is accepted, you will be invited to the office for a three-part test. The first part is the written test, which is a grueling trial that covers a wide variety of complex but very important subjects. The second part is a normal spar against a licensed Hunter selected by the Lodge, where you will be judged on your skill and tactics- not solely on loss or victory. The third part is a "graduate" solo mission, which is handpicked to clash against your specific skillset and is all but intentionally designed to be failed. The grading process is binary, but you will immediately receive your license if you are able to pass all three stages of the test.It is not required to have graduated from a Huntsman Academy in order to receive a license, but it is highly recommended due to the difficulty of the licensing trial.

Hunter Academies
Higher Education
The four major Academies - Beacon, Haven, Atlas, and Shade - were created as per the treaty signed at the end of the Great War. The treaty itself outlined their intended function to be to create warriors equipped to deal with the Grimm on a larger scale, but after years of development their goals have changed ever so slightly. Being a Hunter is now a full-on job, requiring all the tedium and mundanity of any other line of work with an extra layer of brutal combat on top of it all, and therefore it requires a more specialized curriculum to prepare prospective Hunters.
The Academies will prepare their students to fight solo and in teams, both against Grimm and against one another. More importantly, they will prepare their students for everything else being a Hunter entails- from Economics to Psychology, Wilderness Survival to Emergency Medical Training, their students will be well-equipped to deal with the highs and lows of this incredibly dangerous and often thankless job.
