Aura
The Power of the Soul
Aura is a bountiful force that first gave mankind the power to not only protect themselves, but to actually gain ground in the struggle against the creatures of Grimm. It runs like lifeblood through all living things, large and small, quietly resting and shining it's light. However, for those more skilled and experienced, it is a an extremely powerful and versatile tool that allows it's users to fight with far greater ability than the average person.
Function
Aura in it's rawest form serves to enhance the physical capabilities of the body, granting the user greater durability, power, and stamina with passive use, and tying directly into the use of the Semblance. Primarily, Aura acts as a shield between the user and direct damage- however, Aura cannot defend against all types of damage. Shear and tensile forces are difficult for Aura to resist, and as such, bones can still break, limbs can still dislocate, and organs can still suffer internal damage if the user is not careful about what and how they choose to tank with their Aura.
Unlocking
A person's Aura can be manually unlocked by another person with Aura, or it can unlock on it's own if it's user is under significant emotional or physical duress. If the Aura is unlocked on it's own, the semblance is most often unlocked at the same time, allowing the user immediate access to both. If the Aura was unlocked manually, however, it can take time for the Semblance to fully surface, although the user may experience unintentional and random uses of their Semblance before they gain full control over it.
Defensive Aura
When your defensive Aura drops or breaks, it does not mean your Aura has been completely depleted. Past a certain point, the body naturally drops the defensive Aura as part of a "fight or flight" response, saving what's left either for a chance to escape, or a final stand. If your control is good, you can keep your defensive Aura up past the point when it should have dropped, but you won't have much Aura left to work with at that point. Most people with active type Semblances still have about 1-2 uses of their semblance left once their Aura shield drops, while those with passive Semblances will continue to be affected by them for about 6 hours, with decreased potency for the duration.
Burnout
When a person's Aura reserves are well and truly empty, they enter a very dangerous state called "Aura Burnout." When a person is in burnout, their Aura recharges at half speed and is not reliably stable even when it's at a usable level- commonly preventing the use of the semblance, or the manual use of Dust for a time. Burnout can be avoided with careful Aura management, and can be overcome with a full day's rest, but it has spelled the end for many reckless Hunters.

Semblance
Aura, Perfected
The Semblance is a far more personal manifestation of a person's soul, given form by the strength of their Aura. Semblances are completely unique to each individual- some granting even greater strength, even faster speed, and others granting everything from increased luck all the way up to manipulating time itself. Certain semblances, however, can be passed on genetically, though it has been documented that the specific capabilities and capacities will still vary from person to person. Most semblances are active, meaning that they must be manually triggered by the user in order to function, but others are passive, always in effective even for a time after the user's Aura has been depleted. Like Aura, the semblance can be used in conjunction with Dust to add even more versatility and power.
