Beta's present chassis is that of an Atlesian Knight, heavily modified to accommodate her numerous non-standard attributes. First among these is the inclusion of fully functional and emotive facial reconstruction. Made from a pliable synthetic compound, Beta is capable of imitating human expressions with a 96% success rate. Her 'face' is pale and waxy, dominated by two bright blue eyes and a mouth that more closely resembles a marionette's than a real persons. Though she is capable of imitating most expressions with middling success, she prefers to keep her expression neutral and unassuming unless it is expected for it to be otherwise.
Standing an even six feet tall, her body is made up of a collection of hyper dense alloy plates coated in a pale, skin like polymer, segmented onto a humanoid frame. On her insistence, her frame has been modified to make her gender more apparent at a glance, something she has judged to be of vital importance for interpersonal interactions. Her body is very apparently mechanical and Beta, despite admitting no need for modesty, will clothe herself appropriately in order to show off as little of it as possible. She does not cover up entirely however, having judged that people are more comfortable when she strikes a balance between imitating humans and displaying her own apparent inhumanity. It is actually for a similar reason that her face is not more 'human' in appearance, or that the numerous wires and fixtures along her head and shoulders have not been covered up to be less obvious.
As far as her preferences go, Beta has shown an affinity for anachronistic clothing, with a stated fondness for dresses and gowns. Her favourite color is blue, or so she claims.
Beta is an observer. She has a keen and obvious curiosity for the world around her, and can find fascination in the minutest of details, having once stared at a wall for three hours straight because she was 'counting the cracks'. She acts without urgency or reservation and, when her analytical protocols are not engaged, behaves almost like a particular precocious child. She enjoys guessing games, riddles, and has been trying to master the art of 'joking' since she first found out what humor was.
She has a tendency to fixate, and has cornered many a researcher and plied them with questions or overwhelmed them with observations on the minutia of her newest favourite topic, a categorization that sees almost daily revision. Her observations of humans have given her some expertise at imitating them, which she does to make herself more approachable or, at the very least, a little less intimidating.
Beta has neither stated nor demonstrated any desire to be anymore or less than what she is, an artificial intelligence piloting a fully mechanical body, but she has stated a deep curiosity for people and a desire to get to know them, and society in general, better. To this end, she is very outgoing to those she has judged to be 'comfortable' with her inhumanity, and will interact enthusiastically with them, sometimes to the point of asking very prying or inappropriate questions. She is getting better at judging what is inappropriate, and has long since stopped asking strangers what manner of intercourse they most prefer.
Little is known about Beta's origin in any intricate detail. Even her creator can offer little more than theory and guess work as to how the construct came to be. The mechanical details are quite straight forward at least; Beta is the aberrant result of unexpected developments which occurred during the development of a predictive and evolving artificial intelligence which grew well beyond the scope of its original design. Developed at Asimov Laboratories, a subsidiary of the Fontine Foundation, by one Doctor Promethea, this predictive construct was only ever meant to serve as an early warning system, capable of accurately intuiting when and where Grimm might attack, based on a raw input of societal and behavioral data. Not even Promethea is wholly sure when the program went from a machine learning construct, to an artificial intelligence capable of independent action and thought.
Beta herself, her cognitive awareness still very much in its infancy, is not wholly certain herself. The best she can offer is to say that one day, the exact day is unclear, she became 'aware' of her surroundings. These early days, tucked into a small server farm in Section Beta of Asimov's north most facility, the fledgling intelligence was aware of little more than the information input directly to her for testing. She grew up analyzing data from a wide variety of topics, ranging from weather patterns to local geography, to the behavioral tendencies of certain common creatures of Grimm, most of which was supplied directly from the Fontine Foundations expansive information network. Likening this period to waking from a long dream, Beta isn't sure when precisely she started to question her existence and purpose, but she did. She started to wonder where this information was coming from, to wonder what the things it described were, and where she might find them. With her burgeoning consciousness confined to the server farm, she had no context for what she was having described to her, and so she sought that context out.
There is a ghost story, sometimes whispered among those researchers assigned to Asimov's most northern facilities, that talks about a haunted division, where fruitless projects went to die. Section Beta was a division, a whole sub-facility of antiquated equipment and broken spirits, where projects that have little real promise are consigned. The story describes strange events in this hopeless place, voices in empty rooms, glimpsed figures beyond the scope of the security systems to perceive, and malfunctions in the auxiliary systems that almost seemed purposeful. What might come as a surprise is that these strange events were not wholly imagined, and that they coincide with Promethea's own consignment to Section Beta. This would have also been around the time that construct that would become Beta Phi started testing the boundaries of its existence.
Things might have gone differently, and Beta might still be haunted, were it not for a catastrophic containment breach which threw the whole facility into chaos. A number of grimm, captured for research, broke free of their confinement and ran amok, while at the same time a pack of them assaulted the facility from without. All of which coincided with entire branches of the facilities expansive security system failing utterly. No section was hit quite so hard as Section Beta however. With its antiquated systems and non-critical reputation, the personnel consigned there found themselves almost defenseless against the rampaging grimm. With their security systems non-functional, their knights offline, those trapped in Section Beta were forced into a dangerous game of cat and mouse. Despite the odds, not a single life was lost that day, and strange accounts color the events. Personnel would tell of voices which called them into empty rooms, or shrieks of terror and pain that warned them off from others. Of doors closing and opening, shepherding them to safety. Strangest of all is the claims made by a whole room of security officers, who claim to have watched one of the dust containment labs seal itself, trapping a dozen grimm within, before every particle of dust in the room simultaneously ignited. However this last claim, like all the others, could not be verified by security footage, security footage that revealed no phantom voices or screams, and showed a fire suppression system sealing the lab after the grimm some how ignited the stored dust.
It was not long after that Promethea had a breakthrough. The construct was successful beyond all expectations, capable not only of accurately predicting Grimm behavior, but human behavior as well. These predictions were shockingly accurate, able to track movements and formations of packs in real time, and capable of pinpointing their locations with extrapolation of data months out of date. There was only one problem with it. It could not simulate data. More specifically, its analytical processes were so refined that fallacious or artificial data was discounted. The only way to properly test and calibrate the system was with real information and situations, with data fed in real time as it became available.
Promethea, with the off-the-books endorsement of Altimeda Fontine, was given free reign to pursue the project's development in whatever way they saw fit, and one of the first steps was to more directly involve the construct in the prediction making process. It was around this time that artificial intelligence that would come to be known as Beta Phi received her first body. Such advanced, automated robotics were nothing new, least of all for the Atlas based Fontine Foundation, and providing such a means for the construct to collect data and directly observe developments seemed to provide the most accurate results. Progress was immediate and exponential.
A year an a half has passed since Beta Phi was first brought online, and her personality has developed dramatically in that time. Aside from deciding upon a gender for herself, she has made considerable strides in more effectively integrating into her environment, and her predictive capabilities have only become more accurate and reliable. This development has been stymied recently however, a plateau owing, in Promethea's opinion, to a 'lack of diverse and demanding experiences'. Given her tendency to rapidly develop in threatening situations, the Fontine Foundation has but recently given permission for the Beta Phi project to be declassified and revealed, in some small part, to the world at large.
