It is common to refer to the process of waking up in a fright as one may refer to an engine whirring to life, "with a start". Unfortunately, were one to relate how Lily awoke to mechanical terms, they would describe it as first hearing a clinking noise, followed by a loud clanging, which was followed by a resounding clunk, before the engine in question began sputtering to keep running.
As Lily lay there on the tiled floor that was oddly somehow familiar to her, she replayed the process of waking up one more time, to allow her heartrate to slow down slightly.
As her eyes had snapped open, she had found herself in an unfamiliar place. She had no recollection of coming here, nor of falling asleep in the first place. She had snapped up, only to be met with a multitude of pains as she pressed herself up from the thinly padded bedding. For one, there was some sort of foreign object on her right arm, severely limiting her use of the limb. Her left hand similarly had a constricting material rending it mostly unusable. In addition to the strange constrictive materials, there was a throbbing pain emanating from both of the constricted limbs, which only served to heighten her panic in the unfamiliar situation. She had then thrown her hands up in a panic in an attempt to fling away the foreign material. The action made sense to her half awake mind, but the only fruit of her struggle was a terrible pinching sensation at the bend of her left arm, and a strange pull she had not expected.
The needle, which had been suffusing her system with a supply of saline after her blood transfusions, had been forcibly ripped from her vein, and clinked against the aluminum stand which held it above her. That same base was now slowly teetering towards her, which the panicked faunus registered as a threat in her barely awake state. Her response was the same as it always was when an unfamiliar threat was closing in on her, she tried to run. She dug her heels into the bedding and pushed desperately away, tumbling over the edge of the bed and spilling onto the floor in the process. When her tumble came to an end and no follow up came, she took a moment to assess her situation, and came to understand that she was in the infirmary. A few moments passed and she recalled how she had arrived there.
She continued to lay where she had fallen a while, just processing everything that had happened. There was a stabbing pain in her chest, several actually. She was surrounded by a pale blue pleated wall that seemed to be made of some sort of fabric. As she pushed herself into a sitting position, carefully this time, the cloth wall was drawn and a concerned young woman with dark hair and green eyes came in to investigate the clamorous awakening.
As the girl fussed over Lily and helped her back into bed, Lily responded mechanically. Allowing herself to be led. Her mind was elsewhere, rapidly revisiting the fight that had left her broken. She looked down at her casts and bandages, and a hoarse question escaped her lips in the form of a single raspy word. "Aegle?" She questioned, the hoarseness of her voice making her wonder if she endured one of the screaming nightmares which had driven her roommate to request seperate lodging within their first week at the academy. It was also possible that she had simply not drank anything in an exceptionally long time thanks to her as of yet undetermined period of unconsciousness.
The young woman's eye's flitted to a section of the cloth wall not far out of Lily's reach on her lefthand side, and a concerned look rippled briefly through her visage.
"She'll be okay, but she needs rest right now. For that matter, so do you. Honestly, what were you doing out of bed in the first place? You're busted up enough already. Just... lie there, get some rest. I'll go fetch you some food and water, so take it easy okay?" She implored the faunus, who was already starting to become restless.
Lily neglected to answer before the woman retreated, and remained glumly catatonic as her ears began to hone in on the steady breathing coming from what must be a bed beside her. Each time her breath would hitch even slightly, Lily would wince. Those would be the only movements her otherwise catatonic face would make. She knew that Aegle wouldn't be there at all if not for her own foolishness.
Jet had promised she would be fine, but somehow she had known from the beginning that disaster would befall her. It always did, without fail. Like so many times before, her failure had resulted in somebody else being endangered. Unlike Aegle, Lily had been unable to seize the moment and intervene when the girl needed her help. How could she face the girl that she had failed twice? How could she do anything, other than lay there and focus on the girl's breathing. It was proof that at least Lily's worst fears before falling unconscious had not come to pass. She still drew breath. Lily hadn't gotten this poor girl killed, which was reassuring, but not enough to dispel her guilt.
