The Creatures of Grimm
A Preface To The Bestiary
The creatures of Grimm are, as they have always been, a dark force that continually threatens mankind at all levels. They are as numerous as they are powerful, and they currently claim 85% of Remnant's total land- and almost all of it's sea, as well. The origins of the Grimm are poorly understood and hotly debated, one predominant theory among more religious and spiritual groups believing that the Grimm were the creation of a dark god. Although their origins remain a mystery, much about their anatomy, behavior, and other aspects of their existence are extensively documented and well-researched, with new and interesting findings regularly discovered.
Age
Young Grimm are a deceptive threat, and make up the vast majority of the Grimm population. Though they may not be quite as intelligent or large as older Grimm, young Grimm have shown the ability to adapt to new situations mid-combat, and even retreat or reconvene if given ample chance. They can coordinate somewhat well with one another (usually with their various animal-like noises) and must be approached carefully. If you go into a fight thinking the Grimm are mindless brutes, they will quickly prove you wrong.
Masks
When a Grimm falls, it leaves behind a bone-plate mask. Hunters collect these masks and turn them in as proof of a mission complete. The masks themselves are used for both research purposes, and for decoration. No two Grimm masks are exactly the same, there are tiny imperfections and inconsistencies that mark each Grimm as being "unique."
Unique Grimm
As Grimm age and grow stronger and smarter, their bodies quickly morph and adapt. At a certain point, a Grimm can become so completely different from what it began it's life as, that it will be fall under a different (sometimes even completely new) classification or species. Grimm evolve primarily based on where they live and hunt, and what kind of conflicts they've survived. Their ability to adapt and change has been carefully chronicled, but there doesn't seem to be a clear pattern to it. Scientists have theorized that the Grimm could potentially live in any environment, provided their bodies have enough time to adjust to the new extremes.
